Why do you have to sound so damned good?

Along with all of my other musical tastes I happen to like shitty, poppy, over-produced musical candy; and it pisses me off that it has to come wrapped in a religious pamphlet.

I just discovered the band 'Alakrity' thanks to pandora (which probably now will play lots of OTHER Christian bands), and, like Reliant K, I'm quite fond of the way they sound, musically, but I'm really annoyed that if I get their album, I'll be sitting there focusing on trying to figure out if they've got explicitly religious lyrics in it.

I'd much prefer plain old explicit lyrics. I mean, I'm *evil*; it hurts my image to be listening to this stuff! :/ At least with regular pop bands they have the sex and drugs, and the shadowy, vile recording industry backing them like a grinning Mafia Don.

EDIT: Further, I'm aware that some (not all) of these bands have explicitly evangelical goals, and I can't STAND anybody trying to convert me. To anything.

EDIT EDIT: ... yep. Explicitly Goddy. :( *sigh* This is why I like songs in other languages. I haven't a clue what they're saying.

EDIT EDIT EDIT: No offense to the Christains on my friends list. Its just... not my thing, ya know?

EDIT 4: ... and an explicitly pro-conversion "your life sucks without God" song. On the plus side, they have an awesome cover of the original Power Rangers theme
...I'm gonna stop editing this post now.

EDIT 5: Noooooo! Spirituality I can handle. Even vaguely encouraging me to consider being a good person, I can handle. But specifically mentioning being "Born Again"? I'm sorry. Most Christains I don't have a problem with, but honestly I *do* have a problem with 90% of Born Agains and if you are one, I don't know why you've friended this journal.

I lied about the editing thing. Because I'm a dirty sinner.

I didnt realise "born again" was a different KIND of Christian? Mostly Iv only heard it as a term for being a christian.

Anyways you cant really get mad at a Christian band for singing about Christian things. Its kinda their whole shtick?

I'm sorry if this wasn't clear. I'm not mad at christian bands for singing Cristian songs. I'm disappointed in secular musicians not making music that is as catchy/poppy as christian bands.

And yeah, Born Again is *definitely* a particularly type of Evangelical Christianity. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Born_again_%28Christianity%29

To be "born again" is actually used in the bible as meaning to be, well, born again in a spiritual sence. Around here, people just use it as another way to say "Im a Christian", the same as "saved" or "redeemed" or any other of the lingo.

It dosnt really mean a different sort of Christian around here.

But then, Im Canadian. :D

Yeah, in America it is a well known by-word for (and I'm going to be non PC here) pushy, right-wing, evangelical christian dominionists.

You confuse me with your Great Mouse Detective icon! I thought you were my friend, [livejournal.com profile] cybra2003, with her GMD obsession.

And :P Yeah...Cristin's boyfriend told her (who in turn told me) that "Whispers in the Dark" by Skillet was about Christianity, and it kinda ruined it for me. It's an awesome song, so if you try to ignore the religious overtones, it might be better...

Yeah, I remember you saying that. So disappoint.

Get on gtalk! XD

I was friends with a Born Again once. ._.

One of my childhood friends is Christian with a touch of New Age spiritualism, and we've recently gotten back into contact with eachother. She managed to slip a Christian book under my nose as a Christmas present. Nothing about this book said that it was Christian-related! It just kind of snuck up on me and I had to put the book down before I got angry.

That said, I don't like playing the religious guessing-game with bands, either. I was all D8 when aforementioned friend played a band for me and I was like 'This is good!'. . .Until I heard the lyrics.

Ohman and I remember that she kept trying to get me to go to her youth group at church and I was all 'ONLY IF LUCIFER COMES WITH'.

Goddamn I hate organized religion. B|

...but I LOVE 90s bubblegum pop. Somebody recently sent me a super terrible catchy song called "Spinnin' Around" by a band called "Jump5." I had wondered why I had never heard of them. Then I found out that they are a Christian band that just got a little bit mainstream. Ok, whatever, I like their non-Jesus music, I can deal with that. ...But now iTunes thinks I'm a Jesus freak and keeps suggesting that I buy music about abstinence. :(

heh, i know that problem - one song i really like ("in nomine" by adagio) happens to be a heavy metal ave maria... i still like it. just because i don't believe in it doesn't mean i'm not allowed to listen to it, huh? :P

also, i recently finished reading a book that was written by the arch bishop of vienna. it was nice. *shrug*
