At Konami's press event last night in San Francisco, the company closed the show with a brief glimpse at the next Silent Hill game. The short trailer was light on specifics: a blonde man sits on the edge of a bed holding his head in his hands. The world around him morphs into a dark, deserted road in front of a dilapidated gate. The man hears a sound, turns, sees nothing, then gets attacked by something from the darkness when he turns back.

Will it be another retelling a la the divisive Shattered Memories? An entirely new entry in the series? At this point we don't even have an official title, so it's all conjecture.

However, we do know the game is being developed by Vatra Games, the same company behind the upcoming Rush 'N Attack. While the trailer itself was devoid of any concrete details beyond "more to come at E3," the developer's website details the company's focus on "high-end action titles for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC," so it's safe to assume that the next Silent Hill will probably not be for Wii or one of the handheld platforms. And, well, there definitely won't be any music from long time series composer, Akira Yamaoka, but you already knew that.

I have to get my ‘Aw, why not Climax?’ out of the way first thing. SHSM’s story blew me out of the water, and I would have loved (and would still love) to see what they can do with a truly original all new Silent Hill plot. That said, SHSM did sort of fall down (imo) in the area of actual GAME design, so I’ll be interested to see if these Vatra people can top them in that regard. I can’t wait to see what they bring to the table in terms of ‘newness’ in Silent Hill.

I hope for my personal sanity that they’re NOT doing a sequel to Silent Hill 2 (unless maaaaybe if they’re jumping off from the Rebirth ending). I just… no. James’ story is complete and perfect to me; to try to beat it’s dead corpse into a sequel would piss me off like nothing else they could do with the franchise. I suppose I’d be alright with a straight remake, although it seems a bit pointless to me just to make the game again for better graphics; SH2 isn’t ugly to begin with! I guess I’d also be alright wish an SM-style ‘reimagining’ although I’m not sure you can twist that story in the same way that Climax was able to twist the original.

What I’m really hoping for, like many here, is all new story content; and hopefully one worthy of the legacy of Silent Hill. I’m smack in the middle of the psychological/supernatural debate; on the one hand, OBVIOUSLY I adore intense psych drama (one might say torture) but having EVERYTHING be (unambiguously) in a character’s head kinda feels like a cop-out to me. As scary as insanity is; demons frighten me more! XD Especially demons that can and will play with your head. Hehe. I guess what I’m trying to say is epic mindscrew+supernatural=win.

Surprised to hear the news so soon after SHSM’s release (thought we’d have to agonize about it a while longer!) but I can’t wait until we get more info to speculate on. A name… some screencaps…
